Here is some info I found about Quilling:

Quilling is the rolling and shaping of narrow strips of paper to form coils which are then assembled to form many differing designs.

Quilling or paper filigree is an old craft dating from around the middle ages when it would have been mainly carried out by cloistered religious orders. in Europe who had access to handmade papers.

In the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the craft was very popular amongst fashionable ladies especially in England when items such as tea caddies, pictures and small pieces of furniture were crafted. The ladies magazines of the period often printed patterns for paper filigree and a filigree basket is mentioned by Jane Austen in her novel Sense and Sensibility.(1811)

Today the craft is popular world wide especially in Britain, Holland and the United States. We now have a variety of colorful papers accurately machine cut to craft greetings cards and pictures.
